• A Legacy of Unity: 2Rhythms' Expansion from Theatre to Diverse Artistic Expressions

As an artist of color based in LA, it’s always been a struggle to find work and material that represents POC culture. Community support for black and brown work was sparse and far between. While in grad school at CalArts, Jozben Barrett led an initiative to produce work featuring artists of color at the forefront.

Barrett envisioned a theatre production company that would become a black and brown multidisciplinary company, allowing people of color to cultivate their craft and improve their artistry across multiple artistic mediums, amplifying their stories of community and culture. Initially, 2rhythms was a solo project by Barrett that focused on theatre. Black and brown unity has been a mainstay in the core of 2rhythms.

Now, 2Rhythms has shifted its focus and the artistic mediums it highlights. From the beginning, the plan was always to include artists across artistic disciplines—not just theatre actors, but also dancers, singers, filmmakers, and more—to showcase BIPOC talents. Stay tuned for the future of 2rhythms and the evolution of voices that will be debuting their artistry.
